Phone Listings
Phone listings are available in a variety of formats today. The venerable phone book is still around, with its printed listings. 411 calls are available and utilize digital listing databases. The internet is now host to many of the most comprehensive local, national, and international phone listings.
Phone books were the first form of phone listing, they work by printing the number of every subscriber to the phone company in an area, and were distributed to all subscribers. If you did not want your number to be listed, you could pay a fee to be an unlisted number.
Eventually the concept of yellow pages came about, or business listings. Businesses could pay to put adds in the yellow pages, or just simply have their number listed under the heading of the service they provided.
Today 411 and the internet make up digital phone listings. The internet has a major advantage over other forms of listing because you can link to a company’s website directly from their phone listing. The site provides more information about the company such as services offered, rates, and hours of operation.
